WOZZECK
SET & COSTUME DESIGN
CONCEPTUAL
COMPOSER: Alban Berg
SET & COSTUME DESIGN: Jana Lakatos
Dissertation research project on the influence of art on opera design. Series of designs as part of a study into the relationship between the expressionist art movement and expressionist opera.
Design is presented from Wozzeck's subjective perspective to align with expressionist ideals. The design fragments as Wozzeck's mind deteriorates, going from bold & colourful to jagged & monochromatic depictions of the world around him.

PROCESS
DESIGN & REALSIATION
Research into German expressionism and it's links between art & opera. Designs developed inspired by the works of Karl Schmidt Rottluff and the contrast in his works pre/post World War One.
Presented as lino prints to match the early expressionist woodblock print aesthetic. Costumes fragment as Wozzeck's relationship with the character breaks down.
